THE ART IS THE ACTION

What can your practice do?

Artists have always responded to the conditions of their time. Today, climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion and ecosystem degradation demand not only new images and narratives, but new forms of action.

From sustainability to regeneration

Sustainability asks how we can reduce the damage we cause. As a ceramic artist, I know that my practice consumes energy and finite mineral resources. Reducing that impact matters, but for me, it is no longer enough. I want my practice to contribute to repairing what it consumes.

Use what you know. Regenerate what you can

MAKE REGENERATION THE CULTURE

Across the world, people have spent their lives protecting forests, reefs, rivers, soils, species and communities, often with little recognition.

I see a parallel with the artisans behind so many of the objects that surround us: people with extraordinary knowledge who often remain anonymous. Across our ecosystems, there are similar unsung heroes, people whose knowledge, care and lifelong work are keeping living systems alive.

What if culture made these people our leaders?

What if we celebrated those who restore life with the same intensity with which we celebrate those who accumulate wealth, fame or cultural status?

Our ecosystems are not simply resources surrounding human life. They are the living systems that make life possible. They are also places where we encounter forms, intelligence, complexity and creativity.

They remind us what it means to be alive.
